Cesc Fabregas has praised Monaco team-mate Aurelien Tchouameni, who is reportedly the target of Chelsea transfer interest, but added that he hopes the hot prospect stays at the club.

The combative central midfielder has impressed scouts across Europe after an outstanding breakthrough season at Monaco, where he made 42 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals.

And Fabregas sent the Blues a transfer message about the 21-year-old, talking up his potential in a Twitter Q and A session.

He was asked: ‘Will Tchouameni be a good signing for Chelsea? What are his strengths?’

Fabregas’ response read: ‘He has the potential to be the complete midfielder. Modern midfield player, but we need him still… sorry,’ followed by a winking emoji.

Four-cap France U21 international Tchouameni, of Cameroonian descent, signed for ASM for £16million in January 2020, establishing himself as a fully-fledged first-team regular in the club’s midfield engine room and attracting suitors from across Europe.

Chelsea are understood to be one of those sides, with manager Thomas Tuchel keen to strengthen his central midfield options.

N’Golo Kante is a world-class player, while Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic played key roles on the way to the club’s Champions League triumph last season, but Kante is 30 and Jorginho 29, meaning there is no real long-term succession plan.

Conor Gallagher, 21, and Billy Gilmour, 20 have shown promise but are both relatively inexperienced at the top level, with Tuchel intent on adding West Ham and England star Declan Rice, and Tchouameni likely to be a cheaper option if that move fails.

And former Arsenal and Blues star Fabregas, who played 26 times for the Monegaque side this season, clearly feels Tchouameni has the potential to grow into an all-round, Premier League standard player.

However, Chelsea may be wary after spending £40m on another tall, rangy, Monaco and France U21 midfielder in Tiemoue Bakayoko, who has been farmed out on loan for three successive seasons after a disastrous first campaign at Stamford Bridge.
