  • Howe is also pushing for Richard Hughes to take over as director of football

Celtic are hoping to confirm Eddie Howe as their new manager by the end of this week, according to the Sun.

The former Bournemouth boss may not not start the job until June however, as the Scottish side look to close in on Neil Lennon’s successor.

Howe and the football club are not looking to rush the final stages of their negotiations and an official announcement is likely to take place later in the week.

He has verbally agreed to accept the job offer to take over at Celtic Park in time for next season.

The 43-year-old is wanting certain assurances before officially taking the reigns in Scotland and is trying to lure his former Cherries teammates Richard Hughes away from his current role on the South coast.

Celtic are also said to be looking for a a new director of football and head of recruitment – with Howe hoping Hughes will be considered for the director role as he closes in on a new job back in the dugout.

The Hoops, according to the report, would be open to the idea of Hughes making the trip up North with Howe, but it would mean taking a trip back to the drawing board amid their current plans for their boardroom overhaul.

Manchester City’s Fergal Harkin is in the running for the position and Howe’s demand has made matters more complicated.

However, Celtic remain confident they can strike a deal with Howe – who led the Cherries from League Two to the Premier League.

After leaving his role at Bournemouth following relegation back down to the Championship, Howe vowed to take a full year away from the game to spend time with his family – and Celtic are willing to allow him to take that full year out before he officially makes the move.

They are reportedly willing to give him the option to begin his job in the hot-seat at the start of pre-season and he can use the extra time to start planning for a rebuild at the club.
