Zinedine’s perfect nine! Zidane hails Real Madrid’s winning mentality as he lifts his ninth trophy from as many finals as Los Blancos boss

Zinedine Zidane has hailed Real Madrid’s winning mentality after they lifted the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday by beating local rivals Atletico Madrid.

After the two Madrid sides couldn’t be separated in 90 minutes and after extra time, Real saw off Atletico in a penalty shootout with Sergio Ramos scoring the winner in Saudi Arabia.

Ramos’ winning penalty preserved Zidane’s perfect record in finals as manager of Madrid – he has remarkably lifted nine trophies in as many showpiece fixtures.

And following the final whistle, Zidane claimed Madrid’s belief is what sets them apart.

‘In the end, we’re all together and we prepared the matches well,’ said the 47-year-old Frenchman.

‘I don’t know why we’ve won nine out of nine. It’s because that’s what this club is like. It hasn’t been easy, we’ve been patient, calm.

‘At half-time, we didn’t know how to get closer to goal, but we had patience. We believed until the end, like always.

‘Winning a trophy is never easy and even less so against Atletico. Both teams had chances.

‘We’re still in lots of competitions. We have to be happy, but there’s still lots to come. We have to keep working. We’ll rest a bit and play again, as we can’t think about dropping [our level].

‘Now, we’re going to enjoy ourselves, but there’s still a long way to go in LaLiga, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey.’

As well as winning one LaLiga title, Zidane has guided Real to three Champions Leagues, two UEFA Super Cups, two FIFA Club World Cups and two Spanish Super Cups.
